Pilgrimage #4 - Beyond Assisi - August 22

I just spent 15 days (August 22 to September 4, 2015) in Assisi and Rome, Italy with Franciscan Pilgrimages.  I am still excited and processing the intellectually, mental, emotional and even physical challenges of those days.

A quote from St. Francis suits this day and the beginning of our pilgrimage: "I have done what is mine to do; may the Lord show you what is yours."

Our home away from home for the next week was Domus Pacis in the new part of Assisi right next to  Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli which contains the Porziuncola, a small chapel where the Franciscan order began, and the Transito where Francis embraced Sister Death.

The welcoming sign for the huge pilgrim hotel.  Meals here were family-style, and the food was plentiful, fresh and tasty.

The Poziucola opened for night-time visits during August.
The rest of the Basilica was dark and off-limits.

The gold statue of Mary, the dome over the Poziuncola, and one bell tower.  The second tower was never constructed.  The photo was made from one of the third-floor windows of Domus Paci.

A carving of the Annunciation (Gabriel and Mary) on wooden doors of the Basilica.
